Homes and Residences
A growing number of homeowners are choosing to use evaporative air coolers as a money saving alternative to cooling their homes in the warm weather months. Evaporative air coolers are often installed in windows, walls and roofs of homes. Evaporative air coolers are a low maintenance alternative to air conditioning since there are no vents or vent cleaning and can save homeowners up to 75% on their cooling bill.
You can purchase and install an evaporative air cooler for only a fraction of the price of a central air unit. There are many swamp cooler options available. One factor that will help you determine which air cooler is right for your home is the amount of that you intend to cool. If you desire to cool multiple rooms, you may want to consider portable evaporative air coolers.
Warehouses and Garages
For large areas such as warehouses and garages, Commercial Evaporative Air Coolers or Swamp Coolers are the most effective and energy-efficient method of cooling. Commercial evaporative coolers have the power to effectively cool garages, warehouses, patios and even athletic fields or field houses comfortably.
Just like their smaller counterparts, commercial evaporative coolers, cool the air for a fraction of the cost of air conditioning and covers much more space, ranging from 700 to 4,000 square feet.
An evaporative air cooler works great in the greenhouse. Because evaporative air coolers use moisture to cool the air, the plants in the greenhouse get a watering effect in addition to being cooled off. Unlike an air conditioner, a window needs to be open for an air cooler to work at its best.
This is great for a greenhouse, because it allows the plants to have the best of both worlds – fresh air from outdoors, with cool and moist air indoors.
Top 7 Reasons to Purchase an Air Cooler
1. Health Benefits.
Some types of air coolers, provide comfort to people with allergies and respiratory problems, as well as elderly people and children. Air coolers like the Symphony Winter Air Cooler, are ideal for people allergies and other respiratory conditions. These evaporative air coolers draw exterior air into the building. With an evaporative air cooler, you will have the peace of mind that you are saving on your electric bill while doing your part to save the environment.
Why Should I Choose an Evaporative Air Cooler?
In low-humidity areas, evaporative air coolers or swamp coolers can provide an energy-efficient and natural method of cooling. Evaporative coolers, work by passing outdoor air over water-soaked pads, this causes water to evaporate into the pad. The cooler air, which ranges from 15 to 40 degrees fahrenheit, is then directed into a home, which allows the evaporative air cooler or the swamp cooler to by lower the temperature inside the home.
When choosing an evaporative air cooler or swamp cooler, it is important to note the unit’s air moving capacity, as well as installation and maintenance requirements. Some swamp coolers may require more maintenance than portable air conditioners such as replenishing the water supply, draining the unit, and cleaning the cooling pads.
At any rate, the most important benefit of an evaporative air cooler or swamp cooler is that it can efficiently cool an area, using only a third of the amount of electricity of conventional air conditioners.
Overall, evaporative cooling provides significant savings in comparison to refrigerated cooling air units. Evaporative air coolers are made using a simplistic design, therefore they are very low maintenance. By bringing fresh, clean air inside and blowing old air out, evaporative air coolers provide freshly filtered air.
The substantial energy savings alone make evaporative cooling a better choice compared to refrigerated cooling which uses a tremendous amount of energy. The low maintenance of air coolers and the filtered air are great bonuses.
Guide to Evaporative Air Cooler Sizing
It is very important to choose the appropriate sized evaporative air cooler for your space. An incorrect sized evaporative air cooler can cause a high level of indoor humidity and that can be very uncomfortable.
The size of your evaporative cooler should be determined by a few key factors, including the area of space in your home, and the climate in which you reside. Generally, the size of your evaporative air cooler is based on your climate. The following size specifications for an evaporative air cooler are pretty accurate: 2 to 3 cooling feet per minute (CFM) per square foot, in mild-hot climates; 3 to 4 CFM per square foot, in hot dessert climates.
This simple formula will help you determine the proper size evaporative air cooler or swamp cooler for you. All you need to do is determine the cubic feet of space you want to cool, and then divide that number by two. The quotient will give you the CFM rating for the appropriate sized evaporative air cooler or swamp cooler.
For example, if you have a 1,700 square foot home with 9 foot-high ceilings:
1,700 x 9 = 15,300 cubic feet/2 = 7,650 CFM is needed
If you remember these simple tips when purchasing your evaporative air cooler or swamp cooler, you will find the product that will meet your cooling needs:
Be sure to purchase an evaporative cooler that has an appropriate CFM rating or higher. Also, make sure your evaporative air cooler is large enough for your space, but not too large. Purchasing an evaporative air cooler that is too large is not an efficient use of energy and will waste energy, reducing the savings of an evaporative cooler.
Top 10 Portable Evaporative Coolers to Buy
We have compiled a list of the top evaporative air coolers based on consumer reviews. Hopefully, this information will help simplify your portable evaporative air cooler purchase. Here are the top portable evaporative air coolers we have looked at:
1. Honeywell CO60PM
Without a doubt, Honeywell is our favorite brand when it comes to air coolers, period. Only a very small handfull of brands even come close to the reliability and quality Honeywell products offer. Really it is just a matter of deciding what size Honeywell you really need for the area you’re trying to cool.
They have a solid line of coolers, from small rooms to outside patio versions, all the way up to huge units costing thousands. And all of them are very well build models.
Our first choice for “normal” or “average” use is the CO60PM.
One of the things love about this particular model is it can be used both inside or outside, and it has a hose coupling so I don’t need to continuously be adding water to it. I just hook up the hose and I am good to go for as long as I need to run the unit. AND I am running cold water to the unit, this helps even more.
And if I am using it inside, it has a gigantic 15.9 Gallon Tank tank that can last for hours without needing a refill.
Then there is the 3 sided cooling areas. Most units have one area where the cool air comes out. The Honeywell, however has 3 sides to keep you and your family and friends nice and cool. So it’s no longer so important to be pointing it at “just the right spot” if you know what I mean with most other cooler units.
And one other thing to remember, Honeywell has been around for a VERY long time. This is a company that if you do purchase a product from, you know that in 10 years if you end up needing a part or something, they will still be around!

7. Portacool PAC2KCYC01 Cyclone 3000 Portable Evaporative Cooler
This thing is a beast with a 700 Square Foot Cooling Capacity! And we are talking this particular cooler can reduce the temperature by 30-degrees Fahrenheit which is very impressive. And best of all, if you order here on Amazon, it comes ready to use right out of the box, no assembly is required at all. And it is built as a one piece unit, so you won’t need to worry about it sprouting any leaks at the seams or anything crazy like that. The leak-proof molded polyethylene housing is a kind of durable plastic, so no rust issues! And it’s still lightweight enough to be manageable by one person.
And of course you can hook it up using a standard water hose.
NOW, for the BAD…this thing is pretty loud. Not only that, even though it is “Made in the USA” the quality is really not that great. We had problems with the first one that was shipped to us. A few screws were loose, and the coil didn’t get completely covered with water.
Now this may not seem like all that bad, but this is a very expensive machine. So yes, we expected a little more both in the shipping of the unit and its build.
So should you get this? Well…only if you live in a very dry climate, don’t mind the water spray (like do not use it around things that can rust or electronic equipment), and you need something this big. I mean, 700 feet, that is a big area!
